Gray blending has become super popular recently, as more and more people are straying away from traditional salon services and opting for more low maintenance color. But what exactly is gray blending, and are you a good candidate for it?
Gray Blending Vs. Gray Coverage
Traditionally, when a client has gray hair that they don't like, they would get a permanent color that completely covers over the gray. As the hair grows, this creates a harsh, obvious line at the roots, requiring a touch-up every 4-6 weeks. The downside to this is that your hair doesn't look its best the week or two leading up to your retouch appointment, and you are stuck in a very high maintenance routine that takes up a lot of time and money each month. Additionally, because you are using permanent color, you must be committed to one color. If you have the desire to change it up and try something new, it would require a color correction (which is very expensive and can be damaging) or just not be possible at all.
However, gray blending utilizes your natural gray to create a color that is softer and lower maintenance. Touch-ups are only required every 3-6 months, and you have more flexibility when it comes to changing up your look.
Is Gray Blending Right For You?
Everyone with gray hair is a candidate for gray blending, however, the final look fully depends on your natural base color and your gray pattern. What makes this style so low maintenance is that it's working WITH your natural color to create a blend and softer grow-out, so the result is completely custom to YOU.
Keep in mind, if you have been covering your gray with permanent color, it will likely take several sessions to get to your final goal, or you may have to wait several months and let the old color grow out first.
Do you have to go blonde in order to blend your gray?
Not necessarily! As mentioned, the final look is fully dependent on your natural color. The more gray you have, the lighter your result will need to be. If you have 25% or less gray, you can opt for something darker. However, if you have more than 50% gray, you will have to do something in the blonde family.
